I had always rated homemade cookies at “As if!”

Like in, Taking all that time to make crackers when you can buy a box at the grocery store for two dollars? Like!

When I finally made them for the first time, I was surprised at how easy and GOOD they are.

They’re also sturdy enough to dip into hummus or spread with soft cheese.

And you don’t need any special equipment to make them, just a rolling pin and a baking sheet.

Ingredients for homemade cookies: Milk, butter, flour, yeast and salt

Ingredients for homemade cookies

  • Flour: They are made with a combination of whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour.
  • Butter: I use real butter and it’s easier to mix if you grate it first.
  • baking powder
  • Salt: I use regular table salt.
  • Olive Oil – You will spread this over the top of the cookies before baking them.
  • Ingredients: Like all bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, grated cheese, rosemary, or kosher/flake sea salt.

How to make healthy homemade cookies

The dough is made with a few simple ingredients and is easy to roll out.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flours, baking powder, and salt. Beat in the butter with a fork, pastry blender, or your hands. Then add the milk and knead with your hands until it forms a ball.

A ball of homemade cookie dough

Divide the cookie dough in half, wrap the halves in plastic wrap or place them in a container covered with plastic wrap or a towel to prevent them from drying out. Set aside and let the dough balls rest for 30 minutes.

On a lightly floured surface, with a rolling pin, roll it out into a thin sheet. If you like crunchy cookies, roll them thinner. (If you have a pasta maker, you can use it to get a very thin, even sheet of dough. I just rolled mine out by hand.)

Homemade cookies cut out on a work surface

Cut them into desired shape and size with a sharp knife or pizza cutter. You can also use cookie cutters to make fun shapes. Brush the top with olive oil, sprinkle with salt (or your favorite toppings, like all bagel seasoning or sesame seeds), and bake.

Crackers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper

Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. The longer they are baked, the crispier they will be.

Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

What to serve with these homemade cookies

Use these cookies as you would store-bought cookies. Pack them in a lunch box. Put them on a kid-friendly snack tray along with cheese, fruit, and anything else they like to eat.
